Abstract
A modified elastic theory is given by introducing the coupling between the charge-density wave and the distortions in the tap layer into the model of McTague and Novaco. It is found that the continuous rotation al transformation observed on the (001) surfaces of Au and Pt can be d escribed by this theory.
