Abstract
An effective adiabatic condition is derived in order to obtain a singl e local mode operation regime in integrated devices formed by waveguid e elements with quasi-abrupt boundaries. An ion-exchange process, prod ucing this type of graded index transition, is presented in a such a w ay that many difficulties of both fabrication and design of waveguide elements can be overcome.
