A brief outline of the development of the genetics of quantitative tra
its and improvement of methods for their study is presented. It is dem
onstrated that further progress in the genetics of quantitative traits
is most probable with the use of new classes of genetic markers. The
combination of chromosome substitution techniques with RFLP methods se
ems to be especially promising. With regard to problems of genetic ana
lysis, general trait classification, based on five parameters, is prop
osed. The possibility of accurate estimation of the number of genes co
ntrolling differences in crossed plants for quantitative traits with l
ow variation (Cv < 10%) is substantiated.
