This paper presents a review of literature data and of studies perform
ed at the Vavilov All-Russian Research Institute of Plant Industry con
cerning remote hybridization of potato species. Special attention is g
iven to the genetic diversity of the world potato collection. Factors
of interspecific noncrossability are discussed. Various manipulations
to overcome crossing barriers between Solanum species and intergeneric
incompatibility of potato species with representatives of a closely r
elated genus Lycopersicon Tourn. are reviewed. Prospects for use of th
e obtained hybrids in genetic breeding programs are analyzed.
