Abstract
The ferrielectric subphases of the liquid crystal MHPOBC [4-(1-methylh eptyloxy-carbonyl) phenyl 4'-octyloxy-biphenyl 4-carboxylate] were exa mined by an optical retardation technique as functions of temperature, applied electric field, and cell thickness. We found that thinner cel ls exhibit more field-induced ferrielectric steps than do thicker cell s, This appears to be a universal phenomenon for all ferrielectric sub phases.
