Since Ukrainian saline coals contain large amounts of alkaline metals,
these cannot be used as a fuel but can be used as a raw material in c
oal processing. Hydrogenation of coal is the process in which many gas
eous and liquid products are obtained. Some iron compounds originally
present in coal can reveal catalytic activity during hydrogention, thu
s resulting in a higher yield. Mossbauer effect provides for identific
ation of iron minerals and iron compounds in coal and hydrogenation pr
oducts. Results of these investigation show that jarosite has catalyti
c properties and its presence during hydrogention increased the yield
of liquid products.
