The discrete optimal control problem of loadbearing composite walls is
herein investigated. By assuming the possible directions of the appea
rance of cracks as known a priori, the principle of virtual work for t
he discrete static optimal control problem of the composite wall struc
ture under consideration can be formulated as a static hemivariational
inequality. The latter represents the state relation of the discrete
optimal control problem of composite walls. By defining for the proble
m at hand a suitable performance index, the discrete optimal control p
roblem can be put in the form of an optimization problem with as subsi
diary condition a discrete hemivariational inequality which can be num
erically treated by applying an appropriate smoothing procedure.
