K. Minagawa et al., SIGNIFICANT SYNERGISTIC EFFECT OF SUPERIMPOSED ELECTRIC AND MAGNETIC-FIELDS ON THE RHEOLOGY OF IRON SUSPENSION, Langmuir, 10(11), 1994, pp. 3926-3928
The effects of electric and magnetic fields on the theological propert
ies of a suspension of iron particles was studied with a parallel plat
e rheometer. The suspension exhibited a large increase in its yield st
ress upon application of the electric and/or magnetic fields. In parti
cular, the combination of the electric and magnetic fields induced a d
rastic increase of the yield stress owing to the aggregation of the di
spersed particles. With this electromagnetorheological (EMR) fluid, th
e electric and magnetic fields exhibited a significant synergism to in
crease the yield stress.
