The influences of the nominal concentration of Hg, and the ratio of sa
mple size to quartz tube volume during sintering, upon the phase purit
y, microstructure, and superconducting properties of ceramic HgxBa2Ca2
Cu3Oy were investigated. Samples could be prepared consisting of only
the Hg1223-phase, and very few nonsuper- conducting secondary phases,
and with critical current densities in the grains up to 5.17 . 10(6)A/
cm(2) (0 T, 4.2 K). Ageing for 5 months in dry air leads to a strong d
egradation of the grain boundaries. The flux creep behaviour is mainly
determined by bulk pinning effects. (C) 1997 Academic Press Limited.
