A broad class of radiofrequency resonators is identified by a correspo
ndence between their associated eigenvalue problems and those of discr
ete two-dimensional coupled harmonic oscillators. The utility of the t
heory as a tool for describing complex circuit designs is demonstrated
by the explicit treatment of the subclass of M X N square-mesh planar
resonators. The success of the electromechanical analogy and boundary
-value analysis in describing these structures combined with the fact
that they are easy to build and evaluate underscores their potential a
pplicability to magnetic resonance studies. (C) 1994 Academic Press, I
