This paper describes computational methods for the evaluation of safe
limits of operation of driven mechanical systems. We define the proble
m of evaluating the safety of transient and steady-stale motions in te
rms of the escape from a potential well. We then describe a simple, ro
bust method of determining boundaries of safe operation in control spa
ce, and we conclude by applying the method to a number of examples. (C
