Abstract
A microscopic calculation of the anisotropic nonlinear optical surface response of Al(111) is reported. The tangential surface current is sh own to have a remarkably large penetration depth. The anisotropy coeff icient exhibits a striking variation with frequency and its magnitude is comparable to the isotropic component in agreement with recent expe riments.
