Abstract
The optical absorption spectra of cobalt and nickel doped kainite crys tals are recorded both at room and liquid nitrogen temperatures. The s pectra are characteristic of doubly ionised cobalt and nickel ions in octahedral symmetry. The splittings of some of the bands at liquid nit rogen temperature are explained as due to spin orbit interaction.
