The temperature dependence of both the phason-induced Rb-87 1/2 --> -
1/2 rotating-frame spin-lattice relaxation time (T1rho) and the labora
tory frame relaxation time (T1) was measured in the incommensurate pha
se of Rb2ZnCl4. The observed ratio T1/T1rho congruent-to 1.6 is much s
maller than that predicted for the case of a gapless phason (T1/T1rho
= square-root OMEGA(L)/OMEGA1 congruent-to 86), thereby demonstrating
the presence of a phason gap in this system. The phason gap was estima
ted to be 50 GHz, in agreement with other measurements.
