A new and destructive collar rot and foliar blight of Aglaonema commut
atum in Hawaii was caused by Fusarium subglutinans. Collar rot was typ
ified by chlorosis, wilting of older leaves, lodging of plants, and ev
entual plant death. Foliar blight started with elliptical dark leaf sp
ots with chlorotic borders that expanded into petioles and stems. Root
s were generally unaffected. A. c. var. maculatum was extremely suscep
tible to infection, whereas cultivars Emerald Beauty and Silver Queen
were very tolerant.
