Rotational and vibrational rainbow effects in electron-diatomic molecu
le scattering at intermediate impact energies (almost-equal-to 10(2) e
V) are discussed in a simple quantum mechanical spectator model within
the rigid rotor/harmonic oscillator approximation. The total vibratio
nal (summed over all final rotational quantum numbers) and rotational
(vibrationally summed) transition probabilities show vibrational or ro
tational rainbow patterns, characteristic steps, and rainbow singulari
ties, which are analyzed and interpreted in terms of classical cross s
ections.
