Jc. Scholten et al., HIGH-RESOLUTION URANIUM-SERIES DATING OF NORWEGIAN GREENLAND SEA SEDIMENTS - TH-230 VS DELTA-O-18 STRATIGRAPHY, Marine geology, 121(1-2), 1994, pp. 77-85
The ages and average sedimentation rates of four long sediment cores f
rom the Norwegian-Greenland Sea were determined by using various Th-23
0 dating models. The results were then related to an independent time
control (delta(18)O stratigraphy) which was available for the cores un
der consideration. Average sedimentation rates were calculated from Th
-230(ex) vs. depth profiles. These rates are similar to rates obtained
by the delta 18O stratigraphy if the cores cover the past 300,000 yea
rs. A high time resolution is achieved by a Th-230 constant-flux model
for those sediment cores which are not influenced by lateral sediment
transport. A powerful tool for chronostratigraphic studies of sedimen
t cores appears to be the combination of Th-230 measurements and delta
18O stratigraphy, which allows the determination of individual sedime
ntation rates for each core layer.
