Abstract
The field-trip to New. Zealand by John Bolton and Gordon Stanley in 19 48 was a crucial step in discovering the nature of discrete radio sour ces. This paper describes the circumstances surrounding the field-trip and also looks at other investigations in radio astronomy in New Zeal and at that time.
