The new phase Ce16Ru9 (R $($) over bar$$ 3m, a=13.645 Angstrom and c=2
2.742 Angstrom) was examined via the temperature dependences of the la
ttice parameters (10-300 K), magnetic susceptibility (1.5-300 K) and e
lectrical resistivity (0.3-300 K). Different Ce valences (+4 and +3) f
or different crystallographic sites are proposed from magnetic data an
d are supported by previous structural results. No magnetic order is o
bserved down to 0.3 K. Highly anisotropic stresses observed in the ele
ctrical resistivity temperature dependence are attributed to the anoma
lous thermal behaviour of the lattice parameter c.
