The Latino community in New York City and across the country is dispro
portionally represented in the AIDS epidemic. This article explores th
e impact of multiply oppressed group membership on the psychotherapeut
ic group treatment of Latino, HIV-infected injecting drug users. The i
nteraction of traditional Latino values with injecting drug user and s
eropositive identities is described. Clinical examples drawn from a bi
lingual group held in a methadone maintenance clinic in the South Bron
x highlight how oppressed group memberships affect Yalom's curative fa
ctors.
