Abstract
Management of respiratory emergencies in the horse begins with localiz ation of the disorder to the upper versus lower respiratory tract. Dia gnosis is initially aided by recognition of characteristic signs detec ted on physical examination. Ultimately, treatment of respiratory dist ress entails (1) removal of the inciting cause and (2) ensuring adequa te pulmonary gas exchange and tissue oxygenation.
