With an almost perverse ingenuity, education conservatives keep produc
ing new arguments against preferential college admissions for African
Americans. Some of these contentions are sound; some are flawed. The n
ewest one seems unqualifiedly wrong and its widespread assertion in di
stinctly harmful to the educational aspirations of many young blacks.
