Bo. Myrvold et al., THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN THE BULK PROPERTIES OF NEMATIC LIQUID-CRYSTALS AND THEIR PRETILT ANGLES, Molecular crystals and liquid crystals science and technology. Section A, Molecular crystals and liquid crystals, 239, 1994, pp. 211-228
Liquid crystal cells with five different polyimide alignment layers ha
ve been made for the study of liquid crystals alignment mechanisms. Tw
o of the alignment layers are crystalline and three are amorphous. The
se cells have been filled with twenty different nematic liquid crystal
line materials, and the relationship between the bulk properties and t
he pretilt angles has been studied. We find that the polarity of the l
iquid crystal is the best predictor for the pretilt angle. This effect
can be explained by assuming that dimeric pairs of liquid crystal mol
ecules are formed in the bulk, but that they are broken up on the crys
talline surfaces.
