A new method for the preparation of an Al2O3, fiber preform without Si
O2 binder has been developed for the squeeze cast fabrication of Al al
lay matrix composites. Al2O3 short fibers were sintered into a preform
with the aid of fine gamma-Al2O3 powders as a binder. By sintering at
1200 degrees C with gamma-Al2O3, powders, the preform became strong e
nough to sustain the squeeze casting pressure. The 6061 alloy matrix c
omposites obtained from the preforms exhibited excellent strength. Mic
rostructural observation revealed that segregation of Mg was not sever
e in the presence of gamma-Al2O3 binder.
