Cubic zirconia has a smooth brittle/ductile transition above 800 degre
es C at a loading rate of 1.2 x 10(-4) MPa root m s(-1). PI e-stressin
g at 950 degrees C increases the room temperature fracture toughness i
n a controllable manner. The toughness increase is caused by dislocati
on shielding of the crack tip and may be predicted using a model for d
islocation generation by crack tip dislocation sources.
