Abstract
We characterize in algebraic terms the matroids that are not orientabl e. We solve also a problem of Rota, by providing a criterion for decid ing, for a proposition in projective geometry, whether its combinatori al counterpart is valid for matroids. (C) 1994 Academic Press, Inc.
