Abstract
4,4'-Dichloro-2,2'-bis(trifluoromethyl)diphenyl sulphoxide can be prep ared from 2-bromo-4-chlorobenzotrifluoride and converted to the 2,2'-b is(trifluoromethyl)diphenyl sulphone, although the oxidation is remark ably difficult owing to the steric protection of the lone pair on sulp hur by the two CF3 groups. Both the sulphoxide and the sulphone can be converted into the 4-chloro-4'-hydroxy single monomers.
