This paper describes the analysis and subjective testing of broadcast-
quality compressed video conducted by the Public Broadcasting Service
(PBS) and the Communications Research Centre's (CRC's) Advanced Televi
sion Evaluation Laboratory (ATEL). To fulfill the program objectives,
a novel approach to test preparation and conduct was adopted. New meth
odology was employed in the development of a reference model and in th
e selection of test material. The tests were conducted under controlle
d viewing conditions, using internationally recommended methods. Stati
stical analysis was performed on the test results, and observations an
d conclusions are given based on those results.
