Abstract
We present for the first time an exact non-perturbative calculation of the variance of the conductance var(g) = g(2) - g(-2) of a thick meta llic wire for any value of the parameter L/xi, L being the length of t he wire and xi the localization length. This is achieved by mapping th e original problem onto an effective supersymmetric sigma-model and de veloping the Fourier analysis on its field space. In the case of sympl ectic symmetry both the mean value and the variance of the conductance tend to non-zero values ($) over bar g --> e(2)/2h, var(g) --> (e(2)/ 2h)(2) when L/xi --> infinity.
