I. Chanal et al., COMPARISON OF NEW ANTIALLERGIC EYE DROPS, LEVOCABASTINE VERSUS NAAGA,BY THE CONJUNCTIVAL CHALLENGE TEST, Revue francaise d'allergologie et d'immunologie clinique, 34(5), 1994, pp. 420-423
In order to evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of an antihistamine
in the form of eye drops, 0.05% levocabastine, a randomised, double-b
lind trial versus NAAGA (N-acetyl-aspartyl-glutamic acid) was undertak
en in 22 subjects with grass pollen allergy, in the prevention of symp
tomatology induced by a conjunctival challenge test (CCT). Patients re
ceived a single instillation of levocabastine in one eye and of NAAGA
in the other eye, in accordance with predetermined randomisation, 15 m
inutes before the CCT. This instillation was followed by a challenge t
est using the threshold allergen concentration determined in a selecti
on challenge test. The efficacy of levocabastine was evaluated by the
decrease in intensity of the allergic reaction (association of hyperem
ia and pruritus) in comparison with NAAGA, 5 minutes after the challen
ge test. Efficacy results revealed a statistically significant reducti
on (p < 0.0001) in allergic response in the group treated with levocab
astine as compared with NAAGA. Local tolerability was satisfactory and
similar with both types of eye drops.
