Abstract
Various 2-formylcycloalkanones on reaction with alpha-naphthylamine fu rnish the corresponding 2-(alpha-naphthylaminomethylene)cycloalkanones (1 and 3) which on PPA cyclisation afford the desired cycloalka[a]aza phenanthrenes (2 and 4). 5-Aminoacenaphthene on a similar treatment wi th 2-formylcycloalkanones give the corresponding 2-(5-acenaphthylamino methylene)cycloalkanones (5, 7 and 9) which undergo smooth cyclisation to provide the desired cycloalka[j]azaacephenanthrenes (6, 8 and 10). The structures of the products have been elucidated by elemental anal yses, IR and H-1 NMR spectral data.
