G. Miletic, VIBROTACTILE PERCEPTION - PERSPECTIVE-TAKING BY CHILDREN WHO ARE VISUALLY-IMPAIRED, Journal of visual impairment & blindness, 88(6), 1994, pp. 550-563
The study reported in this article compared the performance on perspec
tive-taking tasks of congenitally blind children performing tasks thro
ugh haptic exploration, congenitally blind children using a vibrotacti
le prosthetic device, and children with low vision using limited visua
l abilities. The vibrotactile prosthetic device improved the blind chi
ldren's performance on the perspective-taking tasks. When the visually
impaired children were asked to perform the tasks through haptic expl
oration or the use of limited vision, the perspective-taking tasks did
not adequately measure their perspective-taking abilities.
