We examined the use of laboratory services in a university health clin
ic. Data collected from the International Classification of Diseases N
inth Revision Clinical Modification Code and the Current Procedural Te
rminology Code were tabulated and analyzed from a 2-year period. Labor
atory tests most frequently performed for this population were urinaly
ses, blood counts, wet preps, urine and gonorrhea cultures, and a vari
ety of serologic tests used to screen for chlamydia, beta streptococcu
s, Epstein-Barr mononucleosis, and pregnancy. The findings attest to t
he uniqueness of the college population when compared with the general
physician office laboratory and the importance of health services and
educational planning for this population.
