The current environment of medical economics increasingly mandates tha
t written reports on surgical pathology specimens be distributed as so
on as they are verified by responsible staff members and that they fin
d their way infallibly to clinical physicians attending the patients i
n question. This brief overview describes the institutional experience
s of the authors in managing this aspect of data delivery at large tea
ching hospitals. A system for FAX-transmittal of surgical pathology re
ports is described, used in conjunction with a commercial computer sof
tware package that was designed explicitly for anatomic pathology. Cop
