Recent x-ray diffraction studies have suggested that (3-Cl-anilinium)(
8)[CuCl6]Cl-4 exhibits compressed [CuCl6](4-) octahedra. We report her
e the synthesis of the (3-Br-anilinium)(8)[CuCl6]Cl-4 and (3-I-anilini
um)(8)[CuCl6]Cl-4 analogs. Their magnetic behavior is quite similar to
one another, and in comparison to the chloro compound, the only simil
arity is that they all exhibit chain magnetism, as evidenced by their
broad maxima in the region of 9-12 K. The bromo and iodo compounds do
not exhibit the field dependence of the chloro compound, and in this r
espect, the chloro compound remains unique. For all three compounds, m
agnetic susceptibility data can be analyzed by the antiferromagnetic o
ne-dimensional Heisenberg model.
