THE ICONIC APPROACH TO SOLVING THE PROBLEM OF CORRECTING THE SENSITIVITY INHOMOGENEITIES OF MULTIELEMENT PHOTODETECTOR DEVICES IN SCANNING THERMAL VIEWERS

This paper presents a method for eliminating structural noise in scann
ing thermal viewers caused by sensitivity inhomogeneity of a photodete
ctor device. The thermal field of the observed scene is directly used
as a source of information on the degree of sensitivity inhomogeneity.
The iconic approach consists of using digital image-processing method
s to calculate the compensation factors from the output image of a the
rmal viewer. Experimental results of the application of the method to
test images and real images are presented. (C) 1997 The Optical Societ
