In this paper we review results of the application of Raman scattering
and infrared spectroscopy to the study of molecular dynamics in liqui
d crystalline polymers. In particular we report on the study of molecu
lar ordering and reorientation and illustrate the results we have obta
ined in a newly synthesized class of side-chain liquid crystalline pol
ymers belonging to the polyacrylate family. The physical basis and exp
erimental methods necessary for the application of these techniques ar
e also discussed in this paper.
