This paper provides a commentary on the review by Lilienfeld, Waldman,
and Israel in this issue concerning the use of the term and concept o
f comorbidity in the personality disorder literature. We suggest that
there are three aspects to their review. One is a presentation of the
problem of the fallible relationship between diagnoses and the disorde
rs they purportedly assess. The second is the awareness of this proble
m within the personality disorder literature. The third is their recom
mendation for how to address the apparent misuse of the term within th
e literature. We agree with their discussion regarding the first point
, but not with their characterization of the literature nor with their
proposal to desist from using the term.
