V. Jacobi et al., ABDOMINAL FAT-EVALUATION BY USE OF SINGLE SCAN COMPUTED-TOMOGRAPHY, RoFo. Fortschritte auf dem Gebiete der Rontgenstrahlen und der neuenbildgebenden Verfahren, 166(2), 1997, pp. 115-119
Purpose. Several studies emphasised the importance of the relationship
between intraabdominal and total body adipose tissue as a risk factor
for the development of metabolic or cardiovascular diseases. Therefor
e, the aim of the present study was to examine whether a single scan c
omputed tomography is able to determine the whole intraabdominal fat V
olume with high accuracy and reproducibility. Materials and methods: R
egions of interests (ROls) were drawn manually for measuring intraabdo
minal fat in 51 unsuspicious abdominal CT. Results: The sexual differe
ntiation of adipose tissue already described in a lot of studies could
be confirmed in this study. Fat still predominates in females in lowe
r half of the body(gynoid obesity). In men it predominates in the uppe
r half (android obesity). Significant correlation concerning measuring
the whole intraabdominal fat volume could be found in L1-level in wom
en (r = 0.992) and in L2-level in men (r = 0.992). Measurement of a si
ngle scan enables us to assess whole intraabdominal fat Volume due to
a special formula. Conclusion: The determination of intraabdominal fat
measured by a single scan computed tomography is a procedure associat
ed with high accuracy and reproducibility.
