Vasopressin (VP) is known to reduce food intake in pygmy goats. The hy
pophagic effect of intraperitoneally injected VP (1.5 pg/kg) was block
ed by concomitant injection of the alpha(1)-adrenergic antagonist praz
osin (27 and 40 mu g/kg). Both the alpha(2)-adrenergic antagonists ida
zoxan (300 mu g/kg) and yohimbine (500 pg/kg) and the beta-adrenergic
antagonist propranolol (500 pg/kg) failed to block the hypophagia indu
ced by VP (1.5 mu g/ kg). The results suggest that the hypophagic effe
ct of VP is mediated by alpha(1)-adrenergic receptors.
