Experimental ferrite phase shifters that utilize superconductor circui
ts with very low conduction losses are described. Magnetic flux is con
fined to a closed path, thereby avoiding deterioration of the supercon
ducting properties that occurs when magnetic fields enter the supercon
ductor. X-band differential phase shifters with meanderline circuits f
abricated from niobium superconductors operated at 4 K have produced f
igures of merit exceeding 1000 deg/dB. The designs are adaptable to hi
gh-T-c superconductors.
