The minimal coupling of chiral fermions to a second rank antisymmetric
tensor field is considered, and an alternative to the standard model
is discussed in which the Higgs doublet is replaced by a real scalar a
nd a second rank antisymmetric tensor. The dynamical breaking of elect
roweak symmetry, via the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio mechanism, is shown to occ
ur due to natural four-Fermi interactions. The mean field theory due t
o instanton configurations in the antisymmetric tensor field is also p
resented and possible cosmological applications of this model are disc
ussed.
