The structure of a new tetravalent phosphate has been determined by si
ngle crystal X-ray diffractometry. Although it presents a structure cl
ose to that of LiVPO5, this oxide exhibits a different symmetry. Its c
ell is monoclinic P2(1)/c, with a = 6.5296(4), b = 8.4643(7), c = 7.12
28(6) angstrom, beta = 115.237(6)-degrees, Z = 4. The host lattice [VP
O5] infinity is described as [VO3] infinity octahedral chains linked t
ogether through PO4 tetrahedra. The geometry of the octahedral chains
is intermediate between that of hexagonal tungsten bronze and ReO3-typ
e structure. The relationships with phosphates KVPO5 and Ca0.5Cs2Nb6P3
O24 are discussed.
