A simple mathematical procedure is given for estimating the basic beha
viour of an individual air jet subjected to a cross-flow of upflowing
combustion gases. The procedure calculates the trajectory of the jet c
entreline, the spread of the jet in the horizontal and vertical direct
ions, and the velocity and oxygen concentration on the jet centreline.
The calculations allow for air port shape, the expansion of the jet w
hen it flames and the buoyancy of the flaming jet.
