Abstract
The possible mechanism for the generation of near three photon resonan t third-harmonic in the low energy side of the 6(1)P1 state of Hg is d escribed. It is shown that the existence of strong ac Stark effect, du e to the presence of the additional resonance 6(1)P1 - 6(1)D2 via the fundamental photon, results in a spatially dependent phase mismatch, w hich can lead to nonzero radiation in the DELTA-k > 0 region. Addition ally, the influence of the ac Stark effect as a saturation mechanism w ith increased incoming radiation power is described.
