The socio-economic factors and interests in animal-related practices w
ere analysed in relation to occurrence of FMD in 37 villages of Punjab
State with 20 131 bovine and 673 ovine population during 1989. Twenty
outbreaks of FMD, involving 'O' type virus were recorded in 9 village
s only. A significant proportion of farmers in FMD-free villages was b
etter educated and hence followed latest veterinary and animal husband
ry practices, whereas a significant proportion of farmers in FMD-posit
ive villages being illiterate was ignorant about the above practices.
