We analyze the relationship between the conventional one-boson-exchang
e model (OBE) for nuclear forces with the description of the nucleon a
s a soliton within the context of the two-dimensional sine-Gordon mode
l. We find that the soliton-soliton S matrix contains poles and residu
es compatible with the ones used in the OBE. Implications of this resu
lt for the four-dimensional case are briefly discussed.
