Bacteria belonging to the nitrogen fixation group (Azotobacter) have b
een found to be antagonist against Botrytis cinerea Pers. These bacter
ia synthesize an antifungal compound of low molecular weight which ove
rall inhibits the production of conidia by the fungus. Identification
of this substance is being undertaken with a view to assessing its use
fulness in the biological control of grey rot.
