In the present study a stabilized sodium acetate two-component solutio
n for the Karl Fischer determination of water is recommended. Titratio
n end-point accuracy as well as its high stability, the possibility of
visual detection and storage stability of the reagent are attribute t
o the replacement of pyridine by sodium acetate. Changes of these prop
erties, caused by varying the composition (base/sulfur dioxide/iodine)
or by the exchange of the methanol against 2-methoxyethanol are discu
ssed. Precision and accuracy of the results for the water determinatio
n with the sodium acetate two-component solution as well as pyridine-f
ree commercially available reagent (Merck) are checked with regard to
the pyridine Karl Fischer solution.
