We describe the design and construction of a new compact high-temperat
ure furnace which is used to investigate magneto-optical spectra of at
oms. The furnace can deliver a temperature of up to 2000-degrees-C and
fits into the inner bore of a 6 T superconducting magnet. It is about
60 cm long and has an outer diameter of 10 cm. The optically accessib
le zone of the furnace is 3 cm in diameter. An illustrative magneto-ro
tation spectrum of silver is presented,
